5 Black Owned Men’s Fashion Brands To Support

Ph: galerie.la

I am a supporter of the #BLACKLIVESMATTER movement. Gamma Living is a company that supports the Black Lives Matter movement. In that vein of solidarity during this time of activism and social justice reform demands, by not just the black lives matter groups but much of society in general, we would like to share five Los Angeles based Black owned men’s fashion brands to support right now.

There’s dozens of others you can support as well with a simple Google search, but we would like to showcase these brands that are local to LA/ SoCal where we live and where Gamma Living is based.

1. The Marathon

Many of you know the catchy hooks and melodic flow of the man and legend known as “Nipsey Hussle.” Rest in Power. Nipsey was murdered outside of his clothing store last year by a man with some beef. As Wikipedia states, “Ermias Joseph Asghedom, known professionally as Nipsey Hussle, was an American rapper, activist, entrepreneur and a Rollin’ 60 Crip gang member.” His songs are on hip hop radio stations across the world as well as MTV and main stream music outlets. But lesser known about Nipsey is his store and clothing line and his community work, gang outreach and humanitarian causes.

In honor of the current Black Lives Matter movement and as a tribute to Nipsey we hope that you support his legacy and the Los Angeles community by picking up summer clothes and gear via their website, or stop into the brick and mortar store. They have branded masks to wear for continued social distancing during COVID-19.

2. Galerie.la

We want to showcase a variety of fashion business models owned by black Americans so number two Galerie.la falls more into the sustainable fashion with a local LA native designer and celebrity stylist turned online retailer. As their website says: “Founder Dechel Mckillian is a celebrity stylist originally from Los Angeles whose clients include Drake, Nicki Minaj, Fergie, and Lionel Richie… Realizing the gap between sustainable fashion and her experiences in lifestyle and entertainment, she launched GALERIE.LA to present a tightly curated selection of brands with a shared philosophy.”

Checkout their unique and awesome selection of clothes that also serve the greater good.

Zoezi is a local Black owned and designed brand that is produced and distributed in LA. “Zoezi, meaning exercise in Swahili, is a fashion forward lifestyle fitness brand” says Yvonne, The Founder. After embarking on her fitness journey, Yvonne noticed she couldn’t find brands that connected with her in Kenya so she started this journey with Zoezi which we love for conquering style and fitness.

4. Menogu

Our favorite design by Menogu is their Men’s bowtie set with pocket square in authentic hand dyed African tribal design and hand sewn materials.

MENOGU infuses culture and style to create bespoke pieces. They are a lifestyle brand that brings Africa to the forefront of fashion. The name “Menogu” is derived from the Founder and Designer Uchechi Emenogu. “Emenogu” which means “Acting in good faith.”

This everyday wear is a mix of custom, authentic, and 100% hand-crafted designs.

5. Laced South Bay

Last but not least is a unique shoe store and online retailer that is geared towards the true “sneaker heads” with a blog and podcast.

The companies name LACED is actually an anogram for “Los Angeles Creates Endless Dreams.” At this time of social awareness and calls for change and reform in police forces and nationwide, we find the name to be a nice mantra. We need more people and brands creating dreams, calling for change and putting good energy into the world that unites people. Checkout their supply of shoes and apparel.

Support all of your locally owned black businesses as well as all small businesses and privately owned companies. We can create change with every dollar we spend but only if we are informed and aware of where our dollar is being spent.

A big thanks to Black Book LA  who helped us find additional information about Black owned brands and new companies to support.
