Like most hard-working Americans, I rely heavily on my morning coffee ritual of consuming a nice, warm cup of joe to start the day. So much so, if I didn’t get my daily dose it would result in extreme fatigue, a less than pleasant mood, and brain fog. I accepted this daily routine until I discovered a Venice, California based company that helped me kick my 15+ year old coffee habit. It started at the beginning of the quarantine. I noticed the correlation between my anxiety and heavy consumption of caffeine daily. It affected my concentration. Simple things like sitting still in the chair of my home office became increasingly challenging. Overall it had a negative effect on my mental well being. Admittingly, I had attempted to cease my caffeine habit on multiple occasions over the years for similar reasons. This time I was determined to give it up once and for all.

I was impressed with both the philosophy and the ingredients behind MUD/WTR.
The superfood mix contains: Masala Chai, Cacao, Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Chaga, Reishi, Cinnamon, Turmeric and Himilayan salt. The Masala Chai is a black tea mix that gives mud it’s soul. Combined with the powerful benefits of Lion’s Mane and Reishi mushrooms; along with the digestive benefits that stem from the turmeric, salt and cinnamon. MUD/WTR was exactly what I needed to start my day. The mix does contain about 1/7th of the amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee, which is just enough to begin the day with focus and energy. Thankfully, I didn’t have to quit caffeine cold turkey.
Upon reading a myriad of positive reviews, I decided to take the plunge and order the starter kit. They have an awesome thirty-day subscription that you can cancel or pause anytime. It pretty much comes risk free. About a week later an eco-friendly box equipped with fun stickers that read, “F*ck your Coffee” and “Support your Local Sunrise” arrived in the mail along with the tin and frother.
I was immediately impressed with their presentation. Talk about strategic customer acquisition. I was hooked prior to trying out the product. Of course, I quickly made my first cup of MUD/WTR with their complimentary sample of coconut and MCT oil creamer. It was delicious! As their website describes: “It tastes like a chai latte had a hippie child,” which is pretty spot on. The flavor is smooth with notes of chai and cacao that make each sip enjoyable.
I went from drinking coffee everyday to three-to-four times a week. Over the next two weeks I reduced my coffee consumption from three-to-four times a week down to two-to-three times a week. During that time I experienced some withdrawals and was sleepier than usual. That’s because of the changes of adenosine: one of the body’s most powerful molecules that your body produces the second you wake up. When enough adenosine accumulates over time one naturally becomes more sleepy.
Coffee contains high amounts of caffeine which binds to the adenosine receptors causing you to feel more awake and alert. However, your body begins to overcompensate by producing more adenosine to keep up with the caffeine intake. This can cause an individual to become not only more dependent, but also crave higher amounts of caffeine. When a coffee drinker decides to give up the drug, there’s no caffeine to bind to the receptors, causing them to become extremely drowsy. When I only drank one or two cups of coffee for the week, I definitely needed a few cat naps and multiple cups of MUD/WTR to adjust.
Fast forward four months later and I have been completely coffee free. Okay okay, I may or may not have snuck in a latte or two from my favorite coffee joint here and there. But overall I can confidently say I am no longer dependent on coffee and heavy amounts of caffeine to get my day started.
